Workshop: Crafting Biomaterials
Create you own biomaterials in this workshop at Happylab Berlin
Bio-Material is a new premise by innovators, designers and scientists. Plastic usage reached a point that is uncontrollable and unscalable by the researcher. Using short-term plastics needs to be cut down immediately in that case, the designer has a responsibility to think with biomaterials to prevent a catastrophic future waiting for the next generations. There are multiple ways to approach the material issue; abundant materials from organic tissues, such as food waste, can be used as fibers, or microorganisms can be used as binding factors to materials.
In this workshop, participants will:
* gain skills in crafting natural materials such as bioplastics, kombucha leather and mycelium.
* understand how to control biomaterial behaviour in terms of usage.
* leave with three bioplastic samples ranging from soft to rigid.
The workshop will be held in English! A material fee of €10 will be charged at the workshop.
Workshop host: Ayse Esin Durmaz
Ayse Esin Durmaz is a berlin-based designer, researcher, and lecturer. She is experienced in material-driven design and additive manufacturing with digital fabrication tools and obtained her master's degree in the computational design field at ITECH after studying Interior Architecture and Environment Design. She became interested in material-driven design during her internship at WeMake/Milano where she gained her first maker experiences in the digital fabrication field. While working in the Fablab Kamp-Lintfort (Germany), she graduated from the Fabricademy program - a cross-disciplinary program intersection with biology and digital fabrication. https://www.ayseesindurmaz.com/
Location: Happylab Berlin
Happylab is a so-called makerspace - an open workshop where people can work on their projects 24/7 with digital fabrication tools such as 3D printers and laser cutters and are supported in realizing their ideas. The know-how for handling the machines is conveyed in regular workshops and machine trainings - no prior knowledge is necessary! https://www.happylab.de/
